Royal DSM N.V., the global Life Sciences and Materials Sciences company headquartered in the Netherlands, and the French starch and starch-derivatives company ROQUETTE confirmed during the international Life Sciences Forum, BioVision, that its bio-based succinic acid demonstration plant in Lestrem (France) will be operational by the end of 2009. The pilot scale production has proven that this biological route for producing succinic acid can be commercially viable. The first tests for customers are already underway with this ‘green’ succinic acid.

There’s a dramatic move under way to develop plastics that use plants as feedstocks. Engineering versions of these plastics, at least for now, also contain traditional petrochemical feedstocks in order to maintain stiffness, durability and other properties needed for technical applications. Of course they’re not edible, but they can stand up to the shock of a drop test.

PURAC and AkzoNobel develop additives for PLA

Gorinchem (The Netherlands) January 27, 2009 – PURAC and AkzoNobel have developed additives through a specific organic peroxide technology for the production of Poly Lactic Acid (PLA) a bioplastic made from biorenewable, carbohydrate-based raw materials. The additives play an important role in controlling the polymerization by which PLA can be processed conveniently in standard, commercial polymer processing equipment.

Under the new process, AkzoNobel’s organic peroxides selectively switch off polymerization catalysts, improving the quality and stability of the PLA polymer. The resulting PLA is more stable in melt processing, has consistent flow properties and maintains a positive environmental profile.

Voici un petit concentré de quelques billets issus de ce blog, où je me permets de préciser quelques unes de mes réflexions actuelles autour de la bulle des bioplastiques (bio-polyesters, amidon…). Qu’en pensez-vous ?

Cereplast et Braksem communiquent actuellement sur la mise au point de pilotes de synthèse de polypropylène _PP_ biosourcé. En outre, EPI et Symphony plastics développent des additifs permettant d’accélérer la dégradation des polyoléfines. Ce sont autant de coups durs pour les bioplastiques (bio-polyesters, amidon …). En effet, si le PLLA, par exemple, s’impose aujourd’hui comme une évidence pour l’emballage, cela est du en grande partie par une prise de conscience et une communication axées à la fois sur son origine (des ressources renouvelables) et sa fin de vie (la compostabilité). Or ces deux aspects sont l’objet d’une concurrence féroce.

Bioplastics ‘must go beyond composting’
Leading polylactic acid (PLA) polymer producer Natureworks called this month on European bioplastics producers to think beyond composting as the sole end-of-life waste option for their materials.

“Quite often today we see bioplastics equalling compostable plastics. We really have to get rid of that impression,” Natureworks environmental affairs manager Erwin Vink told delegates at the European Plastics News Bioplastics 2008 conference in Munich last week.

Traditional composting is just one of many solutions for the end-of-life treatment of compostable bioplastics, he told the conference, and even where it is an available option it is not always the best one.
