Bioplastic packaging: The promise vs. the reality

décembre 18, 2008

Un point intéressant sur les bioplastiques (PLLA principalement)

Bioplastic packaging: The promise vs. the reality
By Editorial Director John Kalkowski — Converting Magazine, 11/20/2008

Judging from the attendance at Intertech-Pira’s recent conference on bioplastics, there is high interest in these materials. However, consumer product goods companies (CPGs) who participated in the conference raised numerous questions about the use of bioplastics. Many participants would agree, I’m sure, that bioplastics’ time has not yet come, but it can’t be far off. Lisez la suite de cette entrée »

Development of New Crops and Feedstocks for Biofuels and Biobased Products

décembre 18, 2008

Submitted by Mr. Pete Nelson
As someone who has worked with a variety of new crops and technologies for over ten years, this is an exciting time to be involved with new crops and diverse feedstocks for the biofuels and broader biobased products industries. A number of factors are converging to foster the development of new crops in a way that is larger in both volume, variety, and commercial viability than ever before.

Biobased Products and the Transition to Sustainable Patterns of Consumption

décembre 18, 2008

Submitted by Abby Schwimmer

Ladies and gentlemen! May I have your attention, please. We’ve got a problem – an oil problem, that is. Constituting approximately one-quarter of the world’s petroleum demand, the United States is unquestionably driven by substance abuse, although our 20 million-barrel-a-day oil habit is both 100-percent legal and widely socially acceptable.

Michel Fleck

Over 500 million years ago, in the Ordovician period, the first dermal armour among vertebrates developed with the rise of the now long-dead Ostracoderms. Today, researchers from the Departments of Materials Science and Engineering as well as Mechanical Engineering, both of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, are investigating more recent types of fish body armour with regard to their mechanical properties (Nature Materials, doi:10.1038/nmat2231). In particular, they performed an experimental and computational study of materials design principles in the armour of the ‘living fossil’ fish Polypterus senegalus, a member of the Polypteridae family which appeared in the Cretaceous and has not changed much since.
