Start-up success and green ideas

ENVIRONMENTALLY-friendly packaging solutions won a Wrexhamcompany a top accolade in last year’s Achievement Wales Business Awards.

ProcuraSell scooped theWelsh Assembly Government’s Business Start-up Award for the development of its compostable trays designed for use by food retailers, the catering industry and others.

The company, which has offices in Redwither Tower on Wrexham Industrial Estate, makes its newcompostable trays from natural fibre left over from the sugar refining process. The trays aremade for the company in China and are said to be an ideal replacement for packaging materials such as plastic and aluminium.

Once discarded, they will decompose within a matter of weeks, reducing the volume of waste sent to landfill and helping companies make a major reduction to their carbon footprint.

ProcuraSell chairman Peter Davies said winning the award in the Achievement Wales 2007 Business Awards, backed by executive sponsors the Daily Post, HSBC Bank and the Welsh Assembly Government, had been a huge confidence booster for the start-up business.

“It was a vote of confidence in us and a sign that we are moving in the right direction. It gave us the focus to do what we needed to do which was to market the environmentally-friendly products we specialise in and take them out into the marketplace,” he said.

He said the company was talking to several blue chip customers, as well as smaller concerns, andwas aiming to unveil one or two large contracts wins.

ProcuraSell has also developed a biopolymer compostable bag for use by local authorities and others for kerbside collections.

The Welsh Assembly Government, which is again sponsoring the Business Start-up Award in the 2008 Achievement Wales competition, said the award celebrates the prowess of new enterprises that demonstrate solid business plans and a determination to succeed.

Ieuan Wyn Jones, Deputy First Minister and Minister for the Economy and Transport, said: “I am grateful to the Daily Post for its promotion of the ground-breaking small firms who are helping to transform the economy of North and Mid Wales.

“The Welsh Assembly Government is pleased to support this award, which recognises the role of new businesses in ensuring a prosperous 21st century Wales.

“We help through our Flexible Support for Business, which offers straightforward access, a dedicated team of relationship managers and a streamlined single investment fund. But it is business, not government, that delivers results and I congratulate all who are taking part in this year’s competition.”

Executive sponsors of Achievement Wales, the premier business awards for companies in North and mid Wales, are the Daily Post, HSBC Bank and the Welsh Assembly Government.

The awards, which aim to recognise and celebrate success and excellence in businesses across North and mid Wales, will culminate in a gala dinner and ceremony at Venue Cymru, Llandudno, on November 28 when the winners will be revealed.
