Japanese scientists achieve effective bio-plastics degradation using yeast found in cultivating rice

Scientists from the National Institute for Agro-Environmental Sciences, Japan, report the latest discovery of a yeast, which can effectively disintegrate microbial degradable plastics.Found inside the leaves of cultivating rice, researchers make use of the yeast to degrade an agricultural plastic film derived from PBSA. Placed inside a tray containing the yeast, researchers find that it takes only three days to disintegrate the biodegradable film. PBSA film usually takes more than a month to degrade when placed under soil.
Researchers expect this new finding can help solve “white pollution” caused by the suspension of wasted plastics.
